THE HOME ASSESSMENT METHOD

Your home has a language.
Most of us were never taught to listen.

Before we go anywhere — the book, the rooms, the work itself — let me tell you what this is,and where it came from. Read gently. There is no hurry here.

FIRST, A FEELING YOU ALREADY KNOW

FIRST, A FEELING YOU ALREADY KNOW

You have felt it, even if you have never had the words. The exhaustion in a room that looks perfectly fine. The bedroom that should be peaceful, where you somehow cannot rest.

A low, persistent sense that something is off — with no obvious reason why. Most people carry that feeling for years without ever thinking to connect it to the walls around them. It is almost never named. It is even more rarely traced back to its source.

WHAT THE METHOD READS

That feeling is not imagined, and it is not a failing. It lives in the body - in the nervous system, which is in constant, wordless conversation with everything around it: the light, the sound, the air, the orientation of the space, the placement of every object a life is built around.
It registers all of it long before conscious thought catches up. And it knows - quietly, certainly - - whether a home is holding the person inside it or slowly working against them.

The Home Assessment Method is simply the act of listening in on that conversation and learning to read what it is saying.

WHAT THE ASSESSMENT COVERS

It begins at the threshold, the moment I cross it. Entry is never neutral. It sets the register for everything that follows.

From there, I follow your home through each layer in turn.

Light, natural and artificial: the cardinal orientation of each room, the seasonal shift, what daylight and evening light are doing to your body at different hours of the day.

Sound: not measured, but felt. How you and the people you live with actually receive the acoustic quality of each room, what has simply been accepted without question. There is no universal answer, only what is true for the people living there.

Air and temperature: how your home breathes, how it holds warmth or coolness, and how differently that lands on each person under the same roof, especially where a home is shared.

Touch and material: what the surfaces around you are communicating below conscious awareness. Where a natural material would change the register of a room, and where a plant belongs, or is missing.

Visual field: whether a room gives your body somewhere to settle, or whether what has gathered there is generating more signal than the nervous system can absorb.

Movement and flow: how your body moves through your own home, where the layout creates resistance, where furniture has introduced a friction so familiar it has stopped being visible at all. Furniture placement is addressed and named where it affects flow.

Friction and alignment, the deepest layer: whether your home is still shaped for the life you are living now, or whether it has quietly kept the shape of a life, or a version of yourself, that has already moved on. This is felt in the body long before it can be named, and it is often where the most important work begins.

Shared spaces: in a home with more than one person, what each of you actually needs from the space you hold in common, so it becomes a genuine place of restoration rather than something to be endured or performed within.

Where something in your home is working against you, I say so plainly, and what needs to shift. Many clients act on this entirely on their own.

For anyone who wants to go further, into full styling, sourcing, and design, that simply becomes the next conversation.

WHERE IT COMES FROM

“It began as a book. It was only in writing it all down that I saw it could become something you could actually use.”

It came out of my own experience first. Having rebuilt a home from nothing more times than most people move in a lifetime, I came to feel, directly, what a space does to the body living in it. Then, thirty years working inside other people's homes in intentional interiors, I began to recognise the very same thing in them — in the rooms, and in the people living in them. I could walk into a space and sense exactly what it was doing to them. But I had no name for it at the time.

So I wrote the book — Is Your Home Still Your Castle? — and laid the whole understanding out for the first time. And it was there, seeing it all on the page, that the real idea arrived: that this could become a tool. Something practical you could work through yourself — here, online — and, in time, a companion book and journal to write your own home into. The method is what grew out of the book. This is where you meet it.

Monika

You have felt it, even if you have never had the words. The exhaustion in a room that looks perfectly fine. The bedroom that should be peaceful, where you somehow cannot rest.

If any of this stirred a flicker of recognition — a room you thought of, a tiredness you suddenly understood — then you already have the beginning of this language.

There is a great deal more to it than one page can hold. The true beginning is the book — where the whole understanding lives, and where most people find they can already start to shift things for themselves. From there, the method opens out: ten lenses to read your home through, a way to walk it room by room, and a rhythm that follows the turning year.

WHERE IT BEGINS

The true beginning of this work is the book — Is Your Home Still Your Castle?
