Book Chapter Is your home still your castle?

Is your home still your castle?

A home either lives with you, or without you.

I have never found a simpler way to say what this book is about. The home that moves with you, holds you, meets you where you are and the home that has been left behind somewhere, still holding the shape of a version of you that has already moved on. Most people are living somewhere between those two things, without the language to understand what they are feeling or why.

This book is that language.

What I want to show you is not how to decorate. Not how to style a room or arrange a shelf or choose a colour that will finally make the space feel right. Those things matter, but they are the surface of something much deeper, and the deeper thing is what most people never get to because nobody has ever pointed them toward it.

There is something older underneath all of this. The home is not a modern invention or a design problem. It is our oldest instinct. Long before anyone thought about aesthetics or layout or the right colour for a wall, human beings knew that they needed a place that was truly theirs. A place to return to. A place where the self could be set down and recovered. That knowing is still in us, in the body, in the nervous system, in the part of us that responds before thought does. What this book is about is recovering it. Not building something new, but finding what was always there, underneath the function and the busyness and the years of not quite arriving.

This is not a self-help book, though it touches that territory. It will not give you a programme to follow or a transformation to complete. What it offers is something quieter and, I believe, more lasting. Awareness. The ability to feel what has always been there, working on you, beneath the surface of everything you thought the home was about, and to bring to it the quality of attention that makes the relationship come alive.

Life changes. The person changes with it. And the home, tended with the kind of awareness this book is asking for, changes too. Not reluctantly, not through renovation or upheaval, but through the natural, continuous conversation between a living person and a living space, each one responding to the other, neither one finished, both always in the middle of becoming something more fully themselves.

Is Your Home Still Your Castle? is that language.

If you've been sensing that your own home has something to say, even if you've never had the words for it, this is where you start listening.

Home Staging -

with Strategy

My book guide to success:
Home Staging with Strategy

Why I Wrote This Book

In my 30 years as a home stager and designer, I’ve watched homes transform—not just in appearance, but in energy. A carefully prepared home tells a story. It draws people in. It allows buyers to imagine themselves stepping into the next chapter of their lives, even before they cross the threshold.

At the same time, I’ve witnessed how deeply personal this process can be for homeowners. Letting go is rarely simple. Rooms hold memories, corners hold comfort, and the very spaces that have nurtured us can feel impossible to release. Trusting that change will feel right, that a shift in presentation can open doors to a brighter next chapter—this is the heart of what staging a home truly involves. Even seasoned real estate professionals, with all their experience, can benefit from a framework that honors both the emotional and practical sides of this journey.

This book is for you—whether you are:

  • A homeowner preparing to sell, ready to step into a new chapter with clarity and intention,

  • A real estate professional seeking insights to support your clients more deeply,

  • Or someone who simply wants to reconnect with their space, refresh its energy, and see your home in a new light.

Within these pages, I share observations drawn from countless homes I’ve prepared: how rooms speak without words, how subtle details guide perception, and how thoughtful adjustments can open space and energy—for buyers, for clients, and for yourself. You’ll discover that staging is not just about furniture and color—it’s about creating a sense of possibility, a home that feels aligned with its inhabitants, and a space that invites connection, comfort, and curiosity.

While many of the strategies are designed to help homes sell, the principles extend far beyond that. Even if you aren’t moving, the same guidance can help you see your home with fresh eyes, shift its energy, and create a sanctuary that reflects who you are right now. This is a book about transformation—of spaces, of perception, and ultimately, of the way we experience the places we call home.
