Most of us have experienced jet lag.

After crossing several time zones, the clock insists it is time for breakfast while every part of us wants to go back to bed. We may find ourselves wide awake in the middle of the night or struggling to stay alert during the afternoon. Nothing has changed about our body overnight. What has changed is the world around it.

Over the following days, something remarkable happens. Gradually, almost without us noticing, our body begins to adjust. We sleep at more appropriate times, wake more easily and start feeling in step with the new day.

That familiar experience offers one of the simplest ways to understand circadian rhythm.

The clock on the wall can change immediately.

Our biology cannot.

We tend to think of time as something measured by watches and calendars, yet our bodies experience it differently. Beneath our daily routines is an internal rhythm that helps coordinate when we become sleepy, when we feel more alert, when our body temperature changes and when certain hormones rise and fall throughout the day. We do not consciously control these changes. They continue quietly in the background whether we pay attention to them or not.

For most of human history, there was very little reason to think about this rhythm because the world itself reinforced it. Morning gradually became brighter, daylight shaped the active hours of the day, and darkness arrived without asking permission. Human life unfolded within those changing conditions long before electricity, alarm clocks and illuminated screens became part of everyday life.

Today, something very different has happened.

We can wake before sunrise because an alarm tells us it is time. We can keep working long after darkness has fallen because artificial light allows us to continue. We can scroll through messages in bed, answer emails at midnight and make the kitchen look like midday with the flick of a switch.

None of this means modern life is wrong.

It simply means that we have become remarkably good at overriding signals that our bodies have responded to for far longer than clocks have existed.


The Body Still Knows What Time It Is

Circadian rhythm is often described as an internal body clock, but that can be misleading because it is not a clock that tells us it is seven o'clock or nine o'clock.

Instead, it is a biological timing system that helps organise many processes across the day. Sleep and wakefulness are the most obvious examples, but they are not the only ones. Our bodies naturally move through changing levels of alertness, shifts in body temperature and changing patterns of hormone activity as the day unfolds.

The important thing is that this rhythm does not work in isolation.

Our bodies constantly receive information from the world around us, and light is one of the strongest signals involved in keeping that internal timing aligned with the outside day.

Our eyes do much more than help us see. Specialised light-sensitive cells in the retina also detect changes in the light around us and send information to the brain's internal clock. We do not notice this happening, yet it is one of the ways our bodies distinguish between the beginning of the day and its gradual movement towards evening.

Because of this, the changing light around us is more than a change in what we can see. It provides information that helps our internal timing system stay connected to the day outside.

We may not consciously notice that information, but our bodies continue to receive it.


When We Learned to Extend the Day

Artificial light is one of humanity's great inventions.

It has made our lives safer, more comfortable and more flexible. We can read after dark, prepare meals in the evening, work night shifts, care for children at any hour and stay connected across continents.

The purpose of understanding circadian rhythm is not to reject any of that.

It is to recognise what changed when darkness stopped being a natural boundary.

Imagine a typical weekday.

The alarm rings before dawn. The bedroom light comes on immediately. Breakfast happens indoors. Much of the day may be spent inside an office, a shop or another building where the quality of light changes very little. Evening arrives almost unnoticed because lights come on automatically, and the hours continue with television, phones, computers or household tasks before bed.

There is nothing unusual about this day. That is precisely the point.

Many of us move from one artificial environment to another without ever becoming particularly aware of what is happening outside.

The sunrise may go unnoticed. The changing afternoon light may pass us by. Darkness becomes something we illuminate rather than experience.

Our bodies still carry the rhythm. What has changed is how many of the natural signals around us we experience in everyday life.

The Home as a Filter Between Us and Nature

In the first article of this series, I explored biophilic design and the idea that human beings possess an innate biological connection with the natural world. Natural materials, vegetation, water, textures and daylight all contribute to environments that often feel fundamentally different from highly artificial surroundings.

Circadian rhythm deepens that conversation.

It reminds us that nature is not only something we admire through a window. The changing pattern of daylight and darkness is itself part of the environment to which our bodies respond.

Our homes therefore do something extraordinary. They protect us from weather, provide comfort and give us control over our surroundings. At the same time, they can become a filter that separates us from many of the natural signals that once shaped daily life almost effortlessly.

The goal is not to remove that protection.

It is simply to notice when the filter has become so complete that we barely experience the passing of the day.

 

What We Can Learn From Circadian Rhythm?

Understanding circadian rhythm is not about creating the perfect routine or designing the perfect home.

It begins with recognising something that has been there all along.

Our bodies have an internal rhythm. Daylight and darkness help guide it. Modern life allows us to override those signals more easily than any previous generation, and we often do so without realising it.

That awareness changes the questions we ask.

Instead of asking whether our home is fashionable, we might ask whether we notice daylight during the day.

Instead of assuming tiredness is always a personal failure, we might wonder how often our environment asks our body to ignore its natural timing.

Instead of thinking only about what we add to a home, we might pay attention to what has quietly disappeared: the gradual arrival of morning, the soft transition into evening and the genuine experience of darkness.

Why a closer look at Circadian Rhythm is not something we have to create.

It is something we need to become aware of.
